Leadership Competencies

At its most basic, the word “competency” is defined as “the ability to do something well or to a required standard.”

At GeoStrategy, we help leaders elevate critical business competencies to higher levels of mastery and excellence. In our definition, competencies are the essential knowledge, skills, and behaviors leaders need to work at the level necessary for the achievement of organization goals.

 Knowledge is comprised of the expertise and skills acquired by a person through experience or education. Skill is great ability or proficiency; the expertness that comes from training and practice. Behaviors are the actions or reactions of a person in response to external or internal stimuli. And to be real, competencies must be demonstrated.
 
The Foundation
GeoStrategy improves leadership competencies by first assessing and measuring the competency level of program participants within an agreed upon context. We then customize a 3-5 year program that selects leaders based on your individual business plan, placing peers into cohort learning groups. Cohort learning allows participants to move forward and grow as a group similar to, but superior than, traditional Executive Education programs.
 
The Building Blocks
GeoStrategy’s unique approach to developing leadership competencies embraces three critical areas:
Measurable Patterns—A consistent combination of actions that can be observed, counted, and compared with a standard of performance.
  • Actual Performance—A determination of what people actually do as opposed to what they may have the potential to do.
  • Performance Opportunity—While having the competencies required of a given role is necessary, they’re not sufficient for success. A willingness to perform must be married to the opportunity to perform.
By working on a few competencies per quarter through a combination of group and individual coaching, GeoStrategy ensures that current and future leaders sharpen and maximize the competencies that best serve their personal growth and, accordingly, the success of your organization.
